Welcome to 2010

Posted on 01 January 2010 by Joe Dimeck

2kxSince everyone is overly optimistic about 2010, I’m going to be the Joe Biden to everyone’s Obama. After all, the year just started and I think it’s a little premature to say things like “Happy New Year!” We did the same thing at the beginning of 2009 and look how that worked out.  So, in the spirit of new beginnings let’s take baby steps to ensure our expectations are met this time around. Resolved to quit smoking? Cut back on your daily intake rather than trying to quit all at once. Trust me, all my friends who went the cold turkey route typically started to celebrate their progress after 2 weeks and in no time at all they were back to their old ways.  Trying to lose 10 lbs this new year? Lower your expectations and work at it 2 lbs at a time.

See, it’s easy. If you want this year, 2010, to be the happiest one ever just lower your expectations. That doesn’t mean you have to turn into a mopey pessimist, who curses everything to be doomed from the start. No, it just means you don’t have an unrealistic perception of the world around you. The economy isn’t going to be fixed overnight just like you won’t shed the weight or the smoking habit in only a couple of weeks.  Anything worth the effort typically takes time, and if we plan to do 2010 right it’s going to take patience and continued effort to ensure we don’t have another 2009 on our hands. Let’s avoid blue balls this year and bust all over 2010’s face…Ok, that analogy has officially gone too far. That said, good luck to you in 2010. And remember, we’re all in this mess together so it’s about that time we clean it up or face the reality of maggots in last night’s Domino’s box.

2009: The Year of Bad Trips and Spiritual Blue Balls

Posted on 27 December 2009 by Joe Dimeck

2009blueballs2009 was like a bad acid trip. Obama and the wide-eyed folks who voted for him got a serious reality check. Most people just shrugged it off and found something to distract themselves with. Now we know that miracles—like making D.C. a noble, righteous, and efficient place—are best left to the 3 a.m. infomercial preachers like Peter Popov, who has apparently brought God and magically appearing checks into peoples’ lives with his sacred miracle manna.  At least when we see Popov we know he’s a fraud with empty promises.

With Obama too many people saw the second coming of the messiah and got their hopes up.  Hope alone leads to blue balls of the spirit, and we’re all aching now. To think one man was going to undo decades of crooked work by thousands of syphilis-infected twits was incredibly naïve. Let’s look at the past 30 years as one wild and weird party that was out of control from the beginning. The house got wrecked and we all had some part in it. Sure, others were a little more twisted and did more damage, but when we woke up hungover only to realize it was our house that got demolished we became desperate and asked the one guy who seemed most sober to clean up the mess.  Trashing a house is much easier than cleaning it up, and that’s what we’re slowly coming to grips with. No single person can repair all the damage that was done by all our greed and excess, and it was wrong of us to expect so much.

Nevertheless, the mainstream media seemed to slip further into a debilitating state of psychosis. The major networks have become so mind numbingly frustrating that I now watch Fox News. Why? Because it’s pretty fucking funny. Watching Glenn Beck’s increasingly bizarre psychological breakdown—one that was far worse than Paula Abdul’s on American Idol—was more entertaining than observing Guido culture on MTV’s Jersey Shore.

Even more frightening was Sarah Palin and her growing following of whacko freaks, which was topped only by Octomom becoming an indefinite part of pop culture—at least until Earth gets sick of our shit and hits the refresh button.  Really, some psychopath who got artificially inseminated an insane amount of times actually was news this year. And I guess I’m doing society no favor by reminding everyone about that lunatic with a nickname that only a super villain would have.  Then again, when your friend sleeps with a hog because he drank one too many Slippery Nipples, it’s your duty as a pal and a guy to jog his hazy memory.

It’s the haziness that made this year feel like one of those truly life changing excursions into the world of LSD. The day after is always spotty as random and strange events are remembered while others are forgotten. The previous day always feels as though it were a dream, and this year feels very much like a figment of the imagination. After all, it was one long blur that began for me with a blunt at midnight in New York City, which was promptly followed by mediating a near-violent dispute between bouncers and a person I had just met. A week after that I found myself in Amsterdam, and when I returned the year slowly spiraled out of control. Every bit of news I read was hopelessly depressing and all I could do was put up the blinders and focus on the events directly affecting me.

And from talking with assorted humans about 2009 there seems to be a general consensus that this was just one of those odd years. Nothing seemed to go right and everybody appeared to be walking around in a daze.  2010 is almost here and while we created the yearly cycle there is something about the approaching new year that gives everyone hope for 12 months that are better than the last dozen. But let’s remember that hope is only going to give us spiritual blue balls, and by this time next year we’ll be making the same mistake of thinking a year of unmet expectations will suddenly go away and somehow become awesome once that crystal ball drops in Times Square. No, the only way we’re going to see any change to our collectively lackluster circumstances is to take the proper action to ensure that the great potential of this pivotal point in American history is not wasted. Here’s to 2010: the year we get our shit together and have a lot of fun in the process.

Political Correctness and the Presidential Double-Standard Strike Again

Posted on 16 September 2009 by Joe Dimeck

Kanye West is a jackass.  There’s no disputing this. What he did at the VMAs was just another incident in a long line of boneheaded and douchy incidents involving that megalomaniac.  So when Obama was recorded calling Kanye a “jackass” you think his comments would be met with support, but no, the presidential double-standard strikes again.  Just like when he killed a fly or made a joke about the Special Olympics–and remember, the joke about the Special Olympics was self-deprecating and not a malicious insult towards the Special Olympics no matter how crudely phrased it may have been.

Nevertheless, the media doing what they do best, which is to sensationalize a petty issue for the sake of ratings and pageviews, has taken a subtle opposition towards the president’s statement by reporting that people are upset over the comment.  Well, that’s no surprise.  The Glenn Becks of the world look for any opportunity to call for Obama’s assassination, but Obama isn’t the first or last president to be afflicted by the presidential double-standard. U.S. Drug Czar High On Power

Posted on 24 July 2009 by Joe Dimeck

gil_kerlikowske_official_portrait_smallWhen Gil Kerlikowske was tapped to be the country’s drug czar there was plenty of hope among potheads everywhere.  After all, he was the police chief of Seattle, a pot friendly city that hosts an annual festival, Hemp Fest, which pretty much consists of people just walking around and openly smoking pot.  Rather than order his officers to rain down baton blows on stoned citizens Kerlikowske simply let the people have their fun.  But now it appears he’s taken on a more czar-like position on the matter saying, “Marijuana is dangerous and has no medicinal benefit.” Continue Reading

How Many Shootings Before The Economy is Downgraded to a Depression?

Posted on 06 April 2009 by Joe Dimeck

morgan_sam

For the love of humanity, what is with all the shootings?  Is this what a severe recession is?  The economic woes certainly play a role, but it’s troubling that such senseless violence is occurring so frequently when this financial crisis is still unfolding.  If we look at the murder rates from 1929-1933 (the beginning and height of the Great Depression) we see a rise from 8.4 in 1929 to 9.7 in 1933, after which it steadily declined. Storytime with Bobby Jindal

Posted on 01 March 2009 by Joe Dimeck

After Obama made his address to the nation, the Elephants figured it would be the opportune time to show off their newest product in an attempt to position themselves for 2012.  Their newest toy, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, spoke to the nation from Baton Rouge in what can only be described as an attempt to get his own children’s television show rather than his party’s nomination.  When he said, “Let me tell you a story,” I damn near lost it.  It was more Mr. Rogers’ oratory rather than presidential.  The reason Obama’s speeches are successful is because he treats his audience like adults rather than a kindergarten class.

Jindal was being lauded as the frontrunner for McCain’s running mate, but the GOP decided it wasn’t wise to run minority against minority.  Instead, they opted for hockey mom–you betcha!  Nevertheless, Jindal’s Wiggles-esque approach to addressing adults isn’t the most unnerving thing about him.  The guy is another one of those committed creationists.  In fact, he’s so religious that he actually performed an exorcism.  And you thought Palin was a joke. Obama Maintains Message of Change by Admitting Mistakes

Posted on 03 February 2009 by Joe Dimeck

obamdash

When asked about Tom Daschle’s tax evasion, President Obama did not evade the question and put it simply: “I screwed up.”

The audacity of change!  A president admitting his mistakes so boldly! What in tarnation? The more Obama attempts to make good on his word, the more awesome he becomes.  He keeps getting better, which only causes the cynical side of me to mutter incessantly to myself, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.  If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.  He might be the Anti-Christ! Oh no, if those nuts are right, I’m doomed.  GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF, YOU DOLT!”

Right, let’s get a grip for a second.  After all, I don’t want to be responsible for perpetuating such nonsense.  Enough sick and twisted people have already done a fine job of spreading ridiculous rumors about our president.

As of now, President Obama has been doing a fine job given the circumstances under which he assumed the presidency.  Let’s Obama that he keeps it up.

Are The Big Three Auto Makers Doomed?

Posted on 18 November 2008 by droveto

The auto industry seems to be next on the list of industries that will need federal support in order to maintain its existence in the United States. The Center of Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich., estimates that the failure of the US auto industry would lead to the loss of 2.5 million jobs which is just more bad news in regards to the weakened US economy. Congress is set to debate this week on the fate of the Big Three, GM, Ford and Chrysler. GM has already warned that it may run out of cash and be forced to declare bankruptcy before the end of the year.

They’re a dinosaur in a sense,” Senator Richard Shelby, R-Ala., said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “I hate to see this because I would like to see them become lean and hungry and innovative. And if they did and put out the right products they could survive. But I don’t believe that the $25 billion they’re talking about will make them survive. It’s just postponing the inevitable.” Continue Reading

Amidst Obama Mania, Third Parties Gain Steam

Posted on 17 November 2008 by droveto

During the hype of the past election, which more closely resembled the Super Bowl, and the ensuing Obama Mania, there was a rumbling that picked up a lot of steam, and that’s the quiet roar being heard from Third Party candidates. As the policies of Democrats and Republicans converge, more and more voters are seeking out other options, and as they learn about their philosophies, they are realizing just how little choice they’ve had when deciding upon our leaders in our recent history.
