November 23, 2008 by Mike Newman

This Ozzy/Samsung advert is hilarious! And check it out…if I’m not amiss here, Ozzy texts the “F-bomb” to the barista at about 12 seconds in. Am I right?

Whale Wars: Eco-terrorism meets reality TV?

November 17, 2008 by Brian James

Greenpeace co-founder Paul Watson established the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in an effort to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans. Each winter the Sea Shepherd team and a group of volunteers head out to sea to protect these animals. Through innovative direct-action tactics, Watson and his fellow conservationists expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. Their most recent campaign focused on protecting the illegally hunted whales of the Antarctic. However, this time Discovery Channel was on board to capture it all in an action-packed seven part series called Whale Wars.

From stink bombs to flash grenades and hostages to capsized boats, Whale Wars captures the battles and the controversy surrounding not only the whaling industry but the Sea Shepherd’s “no holds barred” strategy. International whaling laws are interpreted by various countries and organizations in different ways. Over 20 years ago, Japan withdrew its opposition to the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling. Just one year later, the Japanese announced a large-scale scientific whaling program designed to “assess” whale stocks.

Many conservationists like Watson don’t buy it and question the scientific validity of Japan’s research program. Is it nothing more than a front for whaling? Activist groups like Watson’s Sea Shepherd Conservation Society claim that Japan’s whaling practices violate international law. On the other hand, Japan claims the direct-action tactics of Sea Shepherd are illegal, in essence a form of eco-terrorism.

So who’s more in the wrong and less in the right? The Japanese or the “radical” Sea Shepherds? You be the judge. Tune-in to Animal Planet Friday nights at 9PM ET or head over to iTunes and watch the first episode for free. Warning: this show is addicting!

The way music videos should be done: Sia - “Soon We’ll Be Found”

September 15, 2008 by Brian James

Most music videos these days lack everything a music artist should want to include one in one of the only visual opportunities they have to express their music. There are, however, a handful of musicians who who still hold the passion of art close to their hearts. At the forefront of this small yet profound coalition is a rising recording artist known as Sia (You might recognize her from her Zero 7 days).

From her latest album, Some people have REAL problems, comes the video for “Soon We’ll Be Found”; a creative music video acted out in sign language.

Check it out right here: “Soon We’ll Be Found” - Sia

You can thank me later.

Silent But Deadly… A fart commercial with no fart sound?

September 15, 2008 by Brian James

There’s nothing better than discovering a new potential YouTube treasure. Haven’t seen this ad run on television, but apparently this is an actual commercial for Extended Stay Hotels and is based upon something all humans can relate to: farting. My mother thought this was hilarious. You can judge for yourself.

Spread this one around folks!

Femisapien - Hold her hand and get a kiss… from a robot?

June 24, 2008 by Brian James

All you lonely gentlemen out there, this isn’t what you think it is. Femisapien is the latest female robot from WowWee and boasts some pretty neat features. Standing no taller than 1 foot, Femisapien walks like a lady, dances like a lady and even kisses like a lady. You can also program new movements for her. While I am still lost as to who the market for these robots are besides robot enthusiasts, I’m excited to see what these robots will be like in the near future.

Check out this video below of two Femisapiens duking it out in a fencing match!

Mike Edison Rocks A Chronicaster; aka The Bong Guitar

May 20, 2008 by Brian James

It looks as though Mike Edison is at it again. This time he’s wailing on a Chronicaster, or for the musically and drug impaired, a bong guitar. Check out the video below and in case you’re still confused: Chroni = some dank Mary Jane. Caster = Fender StratoCASTER/TeleCASTER. I hope I didn’t actually need to explain that. Anyways, if you don’t know who Mike Edison is then read my previous post Mike Edison - Spoken Word Goes Porno Punk.

I’m still waiting to pick up a copy of his book and spoken word album, I Have Fun Everywhere I Go: Savage Tales of Pot, Porn, Punk Rock, Pro Wrestling, Talking Apes, Evil Bosses, Dirty Blues, American Heroes, and the Most Notorious Magazines in the World. Sounds like a riot.

Coldplay - Violet Hill - Dancing Politicians Video

May 20, 2008 by Brian James

I can never get bored with all these viral videos everyone is creating these days. Check out the unofficial Dancing Politicians video for Coldplay’s new single Violet Hill off their new album Viva la Vida I’ll let the video and the song speak for itself. Much respect to the director Mat Whitecross.

Viva la Vida will be released in stores June 17th with pressure from their record label EMI to pump out sales equal if not better than their previous success with 2005’s X&Y. Word on the industry streets is that the fate of EMI is to be determined by the success of Coldplay’s new album. However, with tracks straying away from their traditional verse-chorus-verse structure and with billboard reviews describing the album as Coldplay indulging in experimentation, EMI has yet to claim the album as music to their ears.
