Learning From Billionaires: The Philosophy Of George Soros

I am fascinated by the financial world, and by the people who succeed in it. It seems to me that many billionaires I learn about are very intellectual. They rarely follow the pack, but instead formulate their own views and then stick to their principles in the face of differing opinions. This is a very admirable trait, because very few people do it in the real world. As a society we seem to value approval and fitting in with the crowds. When I started learning about George Soros, I saw immediately that he thought for himself and that this led him to great success.

The philosophy of George Soros is like a breath of fresh air. In an article Soros wrote for The Atlantic several years ago, Soros explained that deep philosophical musings spurred him on ponder the nature of reality and truth. He tells readers that he was struggling to understand whether or not truth could be understood. Read more on nytimes.com

He used this inquiry to come to the understanding that the ultimate truth is out of the grasp of humankind. His reasoning went like this: “We live in the same universe that we are trying to understand, and our perceptions can influence the events in which we participate”. So, a fish living in water cannot learn about what it means to live in water because they are surrounded by it all of the time, ultimately. Or as Einstein said, we can’t solve a problem with the same level of understanding that created them. The way I understand this, in my own life, is that from within a dream you cannot objectively study a dream. George Soros goes on to say that this “revelation” helped him form a view of theory of history.

His unique theory on history created a clear path for him when it came to political action as well as his trading career. It seems to me that because he did so much deep thinking and finally became clear about what he believed, he was able to discern how to act in the world. Instead of being lead off point by other people’s opinions, he thought about his own understanding and used his own unique theory to devise plans of action.

Because of his views on truth, that no human can hold onto the truth and enforce it, he felt drawn to political action which supported an “open society“, as he puts it in his own writings. Soros was born in Hungary and lived through communist regimes and the Nazi party. He new first hand the atrocities of oppression. After the cold war, he began financially supporting a network of foundations across Europe that would encourage an open society structure. Read this story at Politico about George Soros.

Soros also sees threats to the open society ideal in the USA, he interjects great amounts of funding into American politics. He gives millions in support of liberal politicians, including $27 million towards defeating Bush in 2004, and $25 million to the Clinton campaign in 2016. George Soros is an incredible person to learn from because of his thoughtful insights and inspiring actions.

Thor Halvorssen’s Unique Way of Fighting Against the Abuse of Human Rights

For a long time, human rights activists have been perceived as individuals who just sit in their comfortable offices and talk about human rights. Thor Halvorssen is one man that is striving to change the stereotype associated with human rights activists like himself. As such, Halvorssen is a hands-on person who displays vigor in his endeavors to champion for human rights where they have been abused through totalitarian leadership.

Unlike many other activists, Thor Halvorssen has witnessed first-hand the dangers associated with human rights violation as well as dictatorial leadership. His father was tortured inside a prison in Caracas for shedding light on the corrupt practices in the Venezuelan government. In addition, his mother was also a victim of shooting during an anti-Chavez demonstration.

Well aware of the consequences of dictatorship, Thor Halvorssen and his team of activists at the Human Rights Foundation have devoted their energy to fighting against authoritarianism. He has displayed a strong commitment to helping defectors and dissidents in fighting against tyranny. His support for rebels is displayed by the people he has hired over the years to act as chairperson of HRF such as Garry Kasparov, a Russian political activist.

Thor Halvorssen

Thor Halvorssen is widely acknowledged for his endeavors in supporting the oppressed in society, particularly in nations ruled by dictators. His focus targets various areas such as public interest advocacy, civil liberties, pro-democracy advocacy, individual rights and public policy. Halvorssen has made a name for himself across the global divide through the inception of numerous bodies that champion for human rights. As such, he is known for founding the Oslo Freedom Forum, which serves as a yearly gathering or festival for human rights. Further, he is the President of one of the Human Rights Foundation.

Armed with his vast knowledge in political science and his distaste for threats to democracy, human trafficking, slavery and dictatorship, Halvorssen lectures numerous institutions of learning. Thor Halvorssen’s Support for Evan Mawarire

Annually, Thor Halvorssen, the leader of the Human Rights Foundation, produces the Oslo Freedom Forum as a way for human rights advocates to network with each other. This May event is not only attended by activists, but is also covered by notable journalist. One of the speakers that Thor was most interested in hearing from was Evan Mawarire, a pastor from Zimbabwe.

What Evan Mawarire Did

Thor has encouraged human right supporters to take to social media at all his forums. This pastor was highly successful in doing that starting in April 2016 with a Facebook post calling for governmental change. The video shows Mawarire wearing a Zimbabwe flag as he declares that he is just a citizen. He next explains the different color meanings of the flag. He then urged people to wear the flag daily to show their support for governmental change. Stay-away protests encouraged people to stay home from work on July 6, 2016. In order to show their support the people took to using the #ThisFlag on social media.

Evan Mawarire Arrested

Evan was arrested for inciting public violence and disturbing the peace. Evan then went to South Africa to protect his family. He returned to Zimbabwe on February 1, 2017, where he was arrested at the airport on charges of subverting a constitutionally elected government along with charges of inciting the public to riot. Thor joins with many others in calling for his immediate release.

Thor’s Own Story

Thor can tell his own horror stories of trying to work with governments. His father was arrested when he was very small for protesting against the Venezuelan government. His mother was shot at a protest over her husband being imprisoned. Thor Halvorssen’s cousin has also been imprisoned for protesting against the government in Venezuela.
