Does your MacBook charger overheat? If so, this could be your arm…

October 21, 2008 by Brian James

When Annie dished out over $1,000 for her beloved MacBook she didn’t know it came with a complimentary second degree burn. Wondering how you can get your very own Apple branded burn? You’re in luck. It’s so easy you could do it in your sleep… literally.

i fell asleep next to it.. apple knows this. before all the skin ripped off of my arm you could see a small rectangular melt shape of where it had been against my arm.

More of Annie’s lovely burns after the jump… [Read more]

Apple’s Big Event Tuesday

October 13, 2008 by Will Ehrhardt

So Apple has announced a pretty top secret media event to announce, well who knows what really.  The rumors are running rampant as far as the big things that Steve Jobs has to show us, the eagerly awaiting public.  Will it be a tablet touchscreen type Macbook?  Updated Macbook and Macbook Pros (most likely), or some other ridiculous new thing that will once again turn us on our heads.  Will it be an iPhone type announcement, where we will have to wait 2 years to actually hold whatever it is in our hands?

Chances are there won’t be anything too crazy, I’ve heard things about a 10 or 13 inch macbook for under a grand, which would be awesome.  A new Macbook Pro would also have me thinking about emptying my bank account for a new computer.  Something I need?  Maybe not, but honestly, who can turn this stuff down.  I personally will be keeping my hopes high for that touchscreen deal… In which case my dreams of an iPhone will be officially over for a long time.  Check back later in the week for the news on what the guys over at Apple have in store for us.

Mozilla Releases First Shots of Mobile Firefox

October 13, 2008 by Will Ehrhardt

Firefox junkies rejoice!  Mozilla has released the first shots of their highly anticipated Mobile Firefox, and apparently there will be 2 versions, a touchscreen and non-touchscreen version.  Joining the mobile browser wars will be another huge step for Firefox, which is currently the second most popular Web Browser to Internet Explorer.  Opera has already beaten Firefox to the punch as the first outside Browser for cell phones, so they better be packing some heat with this release.

My hope is that it will be highly supported with add-ons and extensions, so that you could basically turn the browser into your phones OS, and basically run everything right from the Firefox Browser, that may be getting a little bit ahead of ourselves, but this could be a Google Android fighter if they do it right. Just Another Reason We Need To Legalize It

October 13, 2008 by Ripp Sayalot

I’m not going to bore you at the moment with all of the other reasons that marijuana should be legalized, I think that most people believe that anyway. But here is another perfect example of the drug war having adverse effects on the lives of everyone in this country, and it isn’t going away. Grow operations on public land all over the country are completely unregulated, and in turn growers are using rat poison, other illegal chemicals, and poaching to make sure that their harvests yield the highest possible amount of marijuana.

The drug cartels that illegally grow aren’t going anywhere in the current situation. They will continue to find new locations to poison our environment to get their precious harvest. If we would just take a minute and think about this, it could all easily be avoided if the government opened marijuana and hemp up as a cash crop, tax it, and make sure that growers are not adversely effecting our environment and public health. So I found a video on YouTube and thought I would share.  Those that are fans of the original Nintendo Entertainment System and remember the classic game, Mike Tyson’s Punch Out, should like this video.

New Nintendo DS… Now with digital camera!

October 3, 2008 by Marc Schindler

The wonderful folks at Nintendo have improved the Nintendo DS by adding a digital camera that will allow players to mix images, scribble on photos and create new faces.  It will make its debut in the middle of 2009.  It will also have an upgraded wireless functionality, and music playback features with sound stored in a memory card.  It will also brand the name the Nintendo DSi.

Other differences will be that that DSi will be thinner than the current DS model, and will have a bigger screen.

One of the things I am certainly concerned about with these added features is the battery life.  Hopefully they will work their way around that.  Another downside, more for me is that, those who already own a DS will now have to purchase the newer if they want the digital camera feature, which will be used in some games.

As usual, the new Nintendo DS will release it in Japan first, then will be available in the U.S. soon after.

In other Nintedo related news, the Wii will also release a new software called, “Wii Music”.  Players jiggle around their wiimote to feel as if they are playing any one of the 60 musical instruments, including a drum set, saxophone, and even a sitar!

Five ways to ease the pain of Blackberry Thumb and a failing mobile marriage

September 29, 2008 by Brian James

Whoever coined the term “Crackberry” was spot on. There are now over 12 million Blackberry users married to their Curves, Pearls and Bolds. However, not all marriages end happily ever after.

Repetitive thumb movements have left many of us bruised and broken with Blackberry Thumb, a repetitive strain injury attributed to constant Blackberry use. Pain at the thumb base, joint and web space between the thumb and index finger are all tell tale signs that maybe your mobile marriage needs a break. Yet, like a sex addicted Duchovny we stubbornly type, text and scroll through the motions of a digital love/hate relationship.

Is your Blackberry lovin’ stressing out your thumb? Here are five solutions to ease the strain on your mobile marriage: [Read more]

The Blackberry Javelin… Don’t Want Touchscreen? Me Either.

September 28, 2008 by Will Ehrhardt

So I’m in the market for a new cell phone in the near future, and there are some exciting things coming from HTC, Blackberry, and Google, to fight the iPhone. Personally though I would rather not have a touchscreen, ruling out most of the new phones hitting the market these days. Enter the Blackberry Javelin, the update to their ultra popular Curve.

Femisapien - Hold her hand and get a kiss… from a robot?

June 24, 2008 by Brian James

All you lonely gentlemen out there, this isn’t what you think it is. Femisapien is the latest female robot from WowWee and boasts some pretty neat features. Standing no taller than 1 foot, Femisapien walks like a lady, dances like a lady and even kisses like a lady. You can also program new movements for her. While I am still lost as to who the market for these robots are besides robot enthusiasts, I’m excited to see what these robots will be like in the near future.

Check out this video below of two Femisapiens duking it out in a fencing match!

Is Bigger Better? Munk Bogballe’s Thicker, Heavier Version of the MacBook

May 18, 2008 by Brian James

Munk Bogballe\'s Thicker, Heavier Version of the MacBook

“The bigger, the better” always seemed to be the American way. We have the Big Mac. We have SUV’s and non-military used Hummers. We have mansions popping up in small town suburbs. We have enormous condos sprawling across the East River. In contrast, we have the Shuffle iPod, the Mac Mini and the MacBook Air. Technology has become an exception to the rule.

It was only a matter of time before this mindset made it’s way across the Atlantic and over into Europe, but it looks like they’ve got things a bit confused over there with European based Munk Bogballe’s heavier, thicker and more expensive version of the MacBook. For $6,800 you can own a single 2.4GHz MacBook with a 160GB drive and 4GB of RAM and an additional 2.5 pounds as well as an additional 2 inches to the width and depth of the laptop. The bigger, the better, right?

Okay. Maybe not, but this altered MacBook does come with WindowsXP and Microsoft Office, an anodized aluminum surface and a “European aniline leather” bottom (What’s with technology and leather these days? Hint: BlackBerry Bold).

So I’m pretty sure you’re sold on the bigger is better MacBook by now, but knowing that a portion of your $6,800 will be donated to the XO laptop program will probably seal the deal. XO laptops will be given to children around the world who aren’t fortunate enough to have computer access like we do. Does this “giving back to the community” promotion justify your hard earned $6,800?

Before you write that hefty check you might want to check out some of these alternatives first:

For $6,800 you can buy any of these alternatives:

  • 17 inch MacBook with a 30″Cinema Display and an entry level iMac.
  • A dual 3.2GHz quad-core Mac Pro with 4GB of RAM, 4TB of storage, and an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT.
  • 11 entry-level Mac minis.

OR if the charity aspect is keeping you up at night… 17 inch MacBook and 26 XO laptops.

Puzzle Alarm Clock Will Surely Wake You Up… And Piss You Off

May 14, 2008 by Brian James

There have been plenty of times when my cell phone alarm clock fails to wake me up; especially after an unexpected night of drinking 4 dollar PBR and whiskey shot specials. Those are the times when the “place your alarm clock on the other side of the room so you have to get up to turn it off” strategy doesn’t seem to work. Perhaps this Puzzle Alarm Clock is the solution?

Digital Puzzle Alarm Clock

It’s 7:00AM. The alarm clock goes off. Three plastic shapes pop out of the alarm clock. You annoyingly try to shut off the alarm by placing the star shaped piece into the star shaped hole, the hexagon piece into the hexagon shaped hole, and the triangle piece into the triangle shaped hole. It’s quite simple, yet probably more annoying than being late for work.

With that said, your 5 year old will probably love it.

Purchase this Puzzle Alarm Clock, aka automatic cranky mood shifting machine, for around $40.

Jott - FREE Mobile Voice to Text Service

May 10, 2008 by Brian James

Jott - A Free Voice to Text Service

Months ago my friend Michael and I argued about the necessity of having voice mails turned into text messages. I disagreed.

However, with Jott, a free voice to text service, Mike’s mobile dream is one step closer to becoming reality. Jott is a free service that will transcribe a Jott voice message and send it as an email, text, or message in your Jott inbox.

Jott - A Free Voice to Text Service

Ever have a great idea while your out and on the move, but you somehow need to remind yourself? Call the toll free Jott number, tell them who you want to Jott (you can Jott yourself) and after the beep begin speaking. Users have 30 seconds and then the message is transcribed and sent as a text, email, etc. Set up your contacts on the Jott website and when you call the toll free Jott number, you choose who to contact by simply saying the person’s name.

The service is still in BETA version so get on it while it’s still free!

CD-Recycled 45rpm - Making CDs into LPs

May 8, 2008 by Brian James

CD-Recycled 45rpm

Vinyl records died decades ago and the CD is on it’s way out, leaving the music industry in shambles. However, a project by Aleks Kolkowski uses a vintage record cutter to carve grooves into CDs and DVDs, creating a playable record. At the 2008 Futuresonic Festival, Aleks invited visitors to bring digital tracks (mp3, etc) to have carved into these playable CD-Recycled 45s. Pretty neat. Now all I need is a vintage record cutter!
