fashion forward or fashion flop?

November 25, 2008 by Jamie Villarreal

I know, I know. I’ve been slacking and deserve a slap on the hand. Then I decided, what better way to get back into the posting swing than with a hit or miss?

Bobby Trendy and Phoebe Price out for an afternoon stroll and some retail therapy. I know you have to have an opinion on this so let’s hear it!

Bold, fierce and fabulous or hideous, hot mess?

Texting Ozzy

November 23, 2008 by Mike Newman

This Ozzy/Samsung advert is hilarious! And check it out…if I’m not amiss here, Ozzy texts the “F-bomb” to the barista at about 12 seconds in. Am I right?

We’re nearing Holiday shopping time again and I’ve come across a perfect stocking stuffer gift for your favorite little rocker. Jawbone Press brings you Walter Carter’s Classic Electrics – A Visual History of Great Guitars and it’s sure to please the gear-head axe-grinder in your life …or perhaps that’s you!

From Bruce Springsteen’s Telecaster to Brian May’s signature Guild and from Eddie Cochran’s Gretsch 6120 to Strawberry Alarm Clock’s custom-made green skateboard cutout Mosrite (yeah, you have to see it to believe it!), Classic Electrics is pure eye-candy for electric guitar geeks. There are over 350 guitars represented in the book and they all have brilliant photos and informative text, and some with period brochure reproductions and promotional shots. Perfect coffee table fodder and rock conversation starter. [Read more]

If you’re in the New York tri-state area this Friday (November 21st), then you MUST go to the Mercury Lounge to see our good friends, Frances, play their energetic, super-tight live show for their debut full-length album release party. The album is called All The While and it is absolutely brilliant, full of catchy hooks, amazing harmonies, and melt-in-your-mouth melodies. If you can’t be at the show on Friday, you can get yourself a copy of the album from Amazon for under $10 or you can get the digital download at Amie Street for just half of $10! Dig the cover/flyer for the show…

So, hopefully I’ll see you at the show, but if not, make sure to catch this band on the rise in the near future. They’ll probably play in your town in 2009!

The after-party is at Stanton Public.

Listen to songs at the Frances website.

Whale Wars: Eco-terrorism meets reality TV?

November 17, 2008 by Brian James

Greenpeace co-founder Paul Watson established the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in an effort to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans. Each winter the Sea Shepherd team and a group of volunteers head out to sea to protect these animals. Through innovative direct-action tactics, Watson and his fellow conservationists expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. Their most recent campaign focused on protecting the illegally hunted whales of the Antarctic. However, this time Discovery Channel was on board to capture it all in an action-packed seven part series called Whale Wars.

From stink bombs to flash grenades and hostages to capsized boats, Whale Wars captures the battles and the controversy surrounding not only the whaling industry but the Sea Shepherd’s “no holds barred” strategy. International whaling laws are interpreted by various countries and organizations in different ways. Over 20 years ago, Japan withdrew its opposition to the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) moratorium on commercial whaling. Just one year later, the Japanese announced a large-scale scientific whaling program designed to “assess” whale stocks.

Many conservationists like Watson don’t buy it and question the scientific validity of Japan’s research program. Is it nothing more than a front for whaling? Activist groups like Watson’s Sea Shepherd Conservation Society claim that Japan’s whaling practices violate international law. On the other hand, Japan claims the direct-action tactics of Sea Shepherd are illegal, in essence a form of eco-terrorism.

So who’s more in the wrong and less in the right? The Japanese or the “radical” Sea Shepherds? You be the judge. Tune-in to Animal Planet Friday nights at 9PM ET or head over to iTunes and watch the first episode for free. Warning: this show is addicting!

R.I.P. Mitch Mitchell

November 13, 2008 by Mike Newman

First, this year we lost the amazing Buddy Miles of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies, now we must mourn the loss of another fantastic and truly original Hendrix drummer from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Mitch Mitchell.  R.I.P. Mitch!  We’ll always love your killer snare fills!

Rahm Emanuel is Nathan Petrelli from Heroes.

November 12, 2008 by Brian James

This might be a long shot, but doesn’t newly appointed White House chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel resemble super human Nathan Petrelli from Heroes? Adrian Pasdar plays the role of Nathan, a rising politician with a secret ability to fly. However, unlike our fictional superhero, Rahm seems to have been struggling with keeping secrets. Apparently, Emanuel has been accused of leaking details regarding Bush and Obama’s recent meeting. Did someone say auto industry bailout?

Yes - The New Director’s Cut DVD

November 11, 2008 by Mike Newman

On the same day that the phrase “Yes We Can” became the United States’ official new governing philosophy, the premier progressive rock band of all time, Yes, kicked off their In The Present 40th Anniversary tour…with at least one big but. Due to some respiratory health problems that have plagued long-time Yes singer and spiritual leader, Jon Anderson, the band has replaced him for this tour with Canadian Yes tribute band singer, Benoit David. And the smaller but is that keyboardist, Rick Wakeman, who has always been a little flighty anyway, has been replaced by his son, Oliver. The band is rounded out by Yes mainstays Steve Howe (guitar), Chris Squire (bass) and Alan White (drums). Replacing Anderson has been more than controversial to Yes die-hards (including this writer) and even to Anderson himself, but reports from early In The Present gigs are very positive and Benoit David really does nail Anderson’s vocals perfectly (perhaps too perfectly). Even so, many fans still won’t be rushing out to buy Yes concert tickets until Anderson is back in the band. And to bide time until that happens, those skeptics can turn to Yes - The New Director’s Cut from MVD Visual. [Read more]

November 4, 2008 by Mike Newman

Everyone has been on the edge of their seats, not sure of who to vote for up till now. It is now that we can all breathe a sigh of relief; now that the political guru and musical icon who is known to “F*ck Like A Beast” with his rotary sawblade crotch, and who is known to the world over as the amazing…the one…the only…Blackie Lawless, of course of W.A.S.P. mega-fame, has finally laid down all the wisdom that we will need in order to step into the voting booths on Tuesday! Thank you for doing the thinking for us, Blackie…why can’t you be President instead?!

The Fight Between Good And Drunk

October 29, 2008 by dkrausse

Racing toward this show, my first concern is the insistently blinking oil light on my dash, threatening to keep me from getting there at all, and secondly I am worried that the doors opened about an hour and a half ago. I turn up just in time to catch the last few songs of the opening band, Only Crime. They’re supposed to be a no frills, straight forward rock outfit, but really they’re just a Face to Face rip off that have the added bonus of being really preachy. Before their next song the lead singer informs me, “This song’s about how to tell the good guys from the bad guys from yourself,” and then goes on to tell me that I need to wake up. I silently wonder if the Monster I pounded on the drive over will be enough to do the trick and meander over to the bar for a Newcastle. Other than unoriginality these guys are also doing their best to pull off wearing shorts on stage, which anyone knows only ever works if your in a band called AC/DC.

Waiting for some music worth listening to, I revel in the rather unique atmosphere of what’s left of punk. The crowd ranges from early teens who can’t stand still to people about my age. Everyone except myself apparently got the memo to stock up on visible tattoos and torn clothing. At least I remembered my muscles and spiked hair. Every girl In the place is showing all the cleavage she can muster and hanging on the arm of some guy who, as she gazes deep in to his eyes, beams back at her with a look that says, “I’m a douche bag, but because I’m in a band, I’m still going to get laid tonight.” I’m not the least bit bitter. Dungen @ Kemado Records CMJ Showcase - Music Hall of Williamsburg

October 27, 2008 by Mike Newman

You’ve probably heard me singing the praises of Dungen’s brand of Swedish psych-folk rock before, and I’m still singing…especially after the recent release of the 4 album and the Kemado Records CMJ showcase that they headlined on Friday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. If you have any kind of ear for beautiful throwback psychedelic rock they way that I do, you are already a big fan. And if you’ve never heard them and you’re still reading this, listen up below! This is “Satt Att Se” from their new album, 4 (which is indeed their 4th album)…. [Read more]
