Every so often something special comes along and it brings great joy to those who are privileged to witness it.  Between Two Ferns, an awkward-as-fuck talk show hosted by Zach Galifianakis (the chubby, bearded fellow from The Hangover) is one of those special somethings.  Whether it’s asking if he can smell Natalie Portman’s dog’s penis, insisting that Michael Cera tickles his inner thigh, or calling out Bradley Cooper and Jon Hamm for not feeling guilty for being attractive Between Two Ferns is a web series that I personally hope never goes away.

After watching these it’s hard to figure out how much is scripted and how much is Zach being unexpectedly rude and perverse.  If I had to venture a guess, the guests are probably told it’s going to be weird beforehand, but without any specifics given in regards to what exactly “weird” means.  I mean, the reactions are so perfect that if all the guests are in on it they are truly brilliant actors/actresses.

That being said, another great aspect is the subtle stuff like the misspelled or misplaced titles, the ferns’ progression from healthy to brown, and even the camera shots.  Between Two Ferns is absolutely perfect.  In fact, if it got picked up by some cable channel I think that would damage the rawness of the overall show to the point where it would lose some of the awkwardness that comes with watching it.  So, with that go watch all the episodes in order as it just feels better that way.  Also, it’s fun to watch as the ferns get worse and worse.
