A Look at October: Upcoming Releases and Thoughts
October 1, 2008 by Phil Naglee
Oscar season is upon us. What does that mean? It means that studios have been saving the best for the last quarter of the year, as prime voting and consideration for Academy Awards is thrust upon us. This means great box office numbers and generally leads to great movies. October is really the first month of this, and November and December will bring in more contenders for the coveted awards. This month we’ve got some films that look promising, especially one….
Body of Lies-October 10th-A Ridley Scott thriller with DiCaprio and Crowe, chronicling the many challenges of being a CIA operative and the corruption associated with it. DiCaprio doesn’t make bad films and the addition of director Scott and Crowe sounds to me like a win-win. They have had a few missteps here and there, i.e. A Good Year, but more often than not, that team consistently delivers.
W.-October 17th-Josh Brolin is a very good actor, but can he do Oliver Stone’s W. justice? I not too sure about this one, as the supporting cast looks less and less like the ones they are portraying with every trailer I watch for this film. See my thoughts about this movie here.
Changeling-October 31st-Directed by Eastwood, Changeling stars Angelina Jolie as a mother who is the victim of her son’s kidnapping. When he is finally returned, something is wrong. Is this her son? Based on true events, this is the film I am looking the most forward to reviewing. Eastwood is a master of directing and from the trailer, it looks like this one will deliver.
What Just Happened-October 17th-From Barry Levinson, the man who brought us Wag The Dog, Rain Man and Sleepers, brings us DeNiro’s latest as a struggling Hollywood producer. Includes Catherine Keener, Sean Penn and Bruce Willis. I think it looks funny and overall good, let’s just hope it is nothing like Levinson’s last effort: the awful Man of the Year.
RockNRolla-October 31st- Guy Ritchie’s back in familiar territory with RockNRolla after a few flops largely attributed to his wife, Madonna. This film, starring Gerard Butler of 300 fame, is in the same vein as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. Looks like a fun time to me.
