MSG's NYC Sound Tracks and the new-found hipness of subway musicians

September 12, 2008 by Brian James

Like many fellow New Yorkers, Brooklynites and bridge and tunnelers, I have been watching this show called NYC Sound Tracks. The premise of the show is quite simple, yet creative, innovative and New York-ish enough to have engaged me in their search for New York’s best subway musician. An underground talent search… Literally.

Unfortunately, Theo Eastwind, my local fave on the L train Bedford stop didn’t make it into the final round despite my voting efforts. It’s not too late to tune-in though. You can watch past episodes on www.msg.com/soundtracks and catch the final episode this Sunday September 14th at 8PM on MSG.

NYC Sound Tracks is the leading trendsetter in what seems to be a new-found aura of hipness surrounding subway and street performers. Today, the 90’s famed British rock band Oasis launched a unique album leak where NY street musicians perform songs from the band’s forthcoming album Dig Out Your Soul. It’s rumored that band members will be scattered throughout these publicity stunt performances.

So what can we expect next from this resurfacing of the underground? Is the next Beatles sensation awaiting stardom in the dark, gloomy subway platforms of the city, hopping trains and collecting tips? Or is it NYC Sound Tracks final contestants Gibran Soul and Dorian Spencer? Tune-in and find out!
